Johnny finished 2nd Place in Kawartha Speedway

June 26, 2009 – Race 3 Report

Kawartha Speedway – The Full Throttle Racing team and the INEX Ontario Legends Series paid their first of 3 visits to the beautiful ½ mile Kawartha Speedway. This was a Friday night race and we hoped it would fool the weather gods as it has rained on us almost every Saturday night since the start of the season.

The Martin-Coleman Sales, Doug Parmenter Auto Service, Vetteworks of Canada and Mysterious Designs and Graphics sponsored #36 Ford was unloaded from the series trailer as it was at the race shop in Brighton for a couple of weeks getting some adjustments. Johnny would have a couple of test sessions to see how the car was handling before his first Heat race.

After complaining about the handling the previous race he was absolutely delighted how well the car was performing. Thanks Paul Yarrow for yet again another perfect set-up. Johnny would draw his first Heat position which would be in the 6th spot. With the pace car in, it was up to the starter to wave the green and when he did the Johnny was quick on the throttle and would tap the car in front and then shoot out down the front straight. Heading through turn 1 Johnny would be taking up the 4th spot. At straight-away speeds in excess of 200 km/hr Johnny would keep the #36 Coupe in the 4th position until the first caution on lap 5 would slow the pack down.

On the re-start, the leaders #77 of Tim Fernandez and the #79 of Adam Cuthbertson would be a little to anxious and would get on the gas prior to the green flag. This resulted in a two position penalty after the race completion. Johnny would maintain his 4th spot for the final few laps and would be moved up to the 3rd position because of the infractions.

Congratulations to the #40 Owen Smith for his first ever Legends Heat win. In his second Heat, Johnny would also start in the 6th position. A great start would bolt him into 3rd by the end of the first straight. He would make a clean pass on lap 4 and now had the #77 of Fernandez in his sights for the lead. Johnny would look high, then low in every corner to try to find a gap to make it past the #77 but with Fernandez being a previous Canadian Champion he was not going to give Johnny the chance. A drag down the final straight would leave Johnny close to the win but Fernandez would take the checkered. A great race by Johnny!

The #36 would start the feature in the 5th position, inside on Row 3. As the 24 Legends drivers were being introduced to the few thousand spectators by track announcer Spencer Lewis and he got to the #36 he made some wonderful comments about Johnny. He said that the Martin-Coleman Sales, Parmenter Auto Service, Vetteworks of Canada and Mysterious Designs and Graphics sponsored driver was one of Canada’s best young drivers and that everyone should keep and eye him because with his talent on and off the track he has the potential to be racing in the big leagues south of the border. Also that he was one of 10 drivers voted as Canada’s top rookies last year in the Inside Track magazine and that he is one of the most personable young driver’s this province has ever produced. Thanks Spencer for your kind words and support to Johnny and our sponsors. Once the introductions were completed it was time for the 25 lap feature.

On the green Johnny would hold his position through the first corner and they would come out 2 wide and Johnny would take the 3rd position. The #36 would be hounded by the #88 of series point leader and past champion Bruce Grimes and would hold him off for several laps.  The #88 would push Johnny in the draft into 2nd on the 7th lap and they would start to reel in the leader Paul Dejong. They two cars would have to split up on lap 10 as they were in heavy lap traffic and the #88 would make a pass on Johnny to take over the 2nd position. On lap 18 a yellow would slow them all down. Johnny would have a great restart and would once again be in 2nd. The #88 would find his way by the #36 but another caution with 3 laps to go would line them up again. This time Johnny would stick to the bumper of Dejong and would spend the next few laps trying to ward off a charging #77 Fernandez who found his way past the #88. Down the final stretch to the checkered he would have a drag race again with the #77, but this time it would be the #36 Ford that would cross the line first and Johnny would finish the Feature in second.

Incredible driving by Johnny and the timing for the great results just backed up what Spencer Lewis mentioned at the start of the race. The tech inspector made us take the carbs off for inspection and we had no issues, so the trophy was presented to Johnny and he had several autographs to sign as a frenzy of activity was taking place in the #36’s pit box. See you next weekend at Peterborough as we hope to build on our 2nd overall in Championship Series points.
